Great! You are called by HR for a potentially great job! Remember, you are screening that company and position just as that caller is screening you. Don’t waste your time or theirs if the fit isn’t there. Do yourself a favor and avoid saying:
“I am not really looking, I apply to a lot of positions to see what’s out there.” Bad answer. Any good recruiter would run as this response indicates the candidate will be a problem down the road and is always looking.
“I keep my resume posted even when I take a new job. I want to know what’s out there.” Same as above, a flakey flight risk, and dedicated employees won’t want to work with this type of person.
“I don’t discuss money up front, we can negotiate later.” Later may not be an option as there are 149 other candidates who will be direct in their salary expectations.
“My salary requirements depend on the job.” You are talking to a recruiter about a certain job, make sure you aren’t thrown into the “REJECT” pile because you are being evasive. A range is acceptable.
“My boss is an idiot and a jerk, inept, unfair, unqualified, took-my-job,
moron.” Bad-mouthing your inept boss is just bad and reflects on you not that moron of a boss. You will be viewed as a potential problem and bad hire from the beginning. If you have to answer a question about this terrible boss, do be diplomatic, “He has a lot on his plate but does give it his best.”
